Carnival’s traditional queens

In Panama, the Carnival celebration gets underway on Friday, with the crowning of the reinas (queens). Queens are chosen in communities throughout the country, especially in Panama’s central provinces. Representing the best of their communities, the queens are adorned with jewels and dressed in the most stunning, fanciful attire, including voluminous skirts known as polleras. The crowning of the queens almost always takes the form of a direct competition between opposing neighborhoods. The best-known example is the rivalry between the neighborhoods of Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo in Las Tablas, in the province of Los Santos.

Parades and parties

The party continues day and night, with a full slate of public and private events centered around pop music and other entertainment. During the day, revelers fill the parks and town squares in every community, and they look forward to the famous “drenchings,” when tanker trucks filled with fresh water soak them with a refreshing spray. At night, there are parades through the streets. The queens ride on impressive floats with allegorical themes, accompanied by the members of their “court” (their neighbors and other people from the places they represent). There are dances, complete with costumed dancers, bands of street musicians, disguises, and countless fireworks.

Panama’s leading Carnival celebrations

In Panama’s interior, some of the best places to celebrate Carnival include Las Tablas and Villa de los Santos in the province of Los Santos, Parita and Chitre in the province of Herrera, Penonome and Aguadulce in the province of Cocle, and Dolega in the province of Chiriqui. And if you prefer to stay in the capital, the “City Carnival” in Panama City is the perfect choice. This celebration, situated along the Cinta Costera coastal beltway, offers the ideal blend of traditional activities and stage performances by artists from Panama and abroad.
