"Film is life"

Since 2012, the International Film Festival of Panama has brought the latest and most important films from across Latin America and around the world to Panama. This year, the 9th annual festival promises attendees the chance to see new, exciting, and authentic achievements in global filmmaking. This year’s festival has a fresh look, while still remaining true to some of the iconic elements that represent the heart and soul of the event.

Film is life

Where are the film screenings held?

For one week, places like the recently-restored National Theater welcome the best films and filmmakers, along with eager audience members. The theater serves as the festival’s headquarters, and other venues include the Panama Canal Museum, the Biodiversity Museum, and one of Panama’s most popular movie theaters, the Cinepolis at the Multiplaza Paciffic Mall, where films are shown on five screens. At the Mirador del Pacifico on the Cinta Costera coastal beltway, films are shown free of charge under the stars.

Most of the festival’s cultural, educational, and networking events take place in Panama City’s Old Quarter, where the charming cobblestone streets, plazas, and remnants of the city’s colonial past stand in pleasing contrast to the area’s attractive theaters, restaurants, hotels, bars, and terraces. Members of the film industry and the general public alike are invited to join in the festivities.

Panama City and its one-of-a-kind places

As you’re enjoying films from Latin America and around the world at the IFF Panama, you’ll find that there’s plenty to see in Panama City, too. The city’s landmarks include the Panama Canal, a monumental feat of engineering that was completed in 1914. The Museum of Biodiversity is the only one of its kind in the world, and the Old Quarter was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. With a bit of luck, you may even bump into some of the festival’s special guests out exploring the city.
